A special article and its attendant editorial in this issue describe current motivations to employ a multimodal approach to achieving general anesthesia. This perspective includes not only polypharmacy, but also the use of adjunctive regional techniques as well. In this fashion, all 3 intraoperative component goals can be achieved: unconsciousness, analgesia, and immobility. In this illustration, we see these components and their putative molecular targets. The dotted lines indicate how drugs from one explicit categorical aim may implicitly enhance another. The authors of the cited article additionally offer a rational approach to multimodal regimens for a variety of commonly performed surgical procedures. The reader is encouraged to review the article in its entirety for this insight.
